NOVEMBER 2025
My business is officially five years old, and this year I’m celebrating by attending IATEFL’s BESIG conference in Athens. It feels like the right moment to pause, reflect and share who I am, what I do, and how I support Business English learners.
How It Started
After many years teaching English to French speakers as an employee, I realised I wanted to offer something deeper and more personal than what the traditional classroom allowed. I wanted my students to feel connected to the language, not just study it.
That desire led me to create Joanna Richard English.
My Story with Languages
I grew up speaking English in Canada and learned French in the most real way possible: an immersion program with a rural family in Québec, socialising in bars with an international circle of friends, and eventually building a life in France.
It wasn’t grammar books that taught me French; it was experience, emotion, culture and connection. That shapes everything I do as a coach today.
I’m certified to teach English to adults, but my strongest skills come from years of working with professionals across many industries. Experience has been my best teacher.
From Teacher to Coach
Over time, my style has naturally evolved. I don’t just teach English; I coach learners through the mindset, confidence and communication skills they need to express themselves professionally.
I love creating customized content for my set designers, CRM specialists, industrial architects, international sales managers and fellow entrepreneurs. We don’t follow the textbook. We use your real work, your real challenges and your real goals to accelerate your progress.
Why I Do This Work
I’m stubborn in the best way. I take the idea that “French people are bad at English” as a personal challenge. I don’t believe it for a second. Language learning has nothing to do with nationality and everything to do with mindset.
My mission is to help you change that mindset, build confidence and actually enjoy speaking English.
Who I Work With
Most of my students are B1/B2 intermediate learners. They are ambitious, competent professionals who feel frustrated that their English doesn’t fully reflect their expertise, confidence or career level.
They want more for themselves, and they’re ready to grow.
